World Haemophilia Day observed at MMC

Special Correspondent

Actual number of haemophilia patients in the State identified

Methods available to identify it and provide required medical care

CHENNAI: The need to understand that haemophilia was only a genetic disorder, which could be treated, was stressed by several speakers at the World Haemophilia Day organised by the Madras Medical College (MMC) Hospital on Saturday.

Usha Varadarajan, Professor, Department of Haematology, MMC, said it should not be regarded as a disease that would affect one all through his/her life. Now methods were available to identify it and provide the required medical care. Timely approach was required for persons with haemophilia she said adding that the State Health and Family Welfare Department is in the process of acquiring the required factors to provide the treatment.

V. Kanagasabai, Dean, Madras Medical College, said there was a proposal to treat the haemophilia patients in the out patient ward itself by storing the medicines there itself. He also suggested that these patients be brought under differently-abled category.

Actual number of haemophilia patients in the State had been identified, said C. Vamsadhara, Director of Medical Education. This clearly indicated the lack of awareness about the disorder among people, she said.

Sharing his experience, V. Santhanam, father of two haemophilia children, said both his sons had the disorder. However, the encouragement from the doctors and the Haemophilia Federation had helped them to overcome the problem.
