Two killed, four injured in building collapse

Staff Reporter

KANJIRAPPALLY: Two persons were killed and four sustained injuries when a portion of a building, which was being demolished, collapsed here on Saturday morning.

The police said the incident took place around 9 a.m. at the Kurishupally Junction. The deceased have been identified as Thomas (68), who hailed from the Kulangara house, and Babu (54) of the Karippaparambil Thundiyil house. They met with the tragic end while they were eating at a wayside vending outlet adjacent to the building being demolished.

Sabu, a loading worker, who took part in the rescue operation, was critically injured when another concrete beam of the building fell onto his right thigh. He was admitted to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

Others injured have been identified as Sahadevan (52), Joy (45) and Kodiyattil George (46), who have all been admitted to the Taluk Government Hospital here.

According to the police, the rundown building that belonged to Thomas of the Madukkakuzhi house was undergoing demolition in a phased manner and the top portion was removed earlier. The recent rain is believed to have weakened the remaining portions of the building, leading to its collapse.
