KOCHI: After tailing the favourite, Mumbai's Upamanyu Dutta, in the first two races, Pune's Vishnu Saravanan won the third race and grabbed the overall lead after the opening day's action in the Cochin Shipyard-National Coastal Optimist Championship at Cherai, near here, on Saturday evening. Upamanyu, who won the Sail the Gulf event in Doha (Qatar) recently, was sitting pretty after winning the first two races but a fifth-place finish in the day's last round pushed him to the second spot with seven points. The sailor with the least number of points wins the 12-race series which is spread over four days and Vishnu Saravanan was at the top of the pack after the first day with five points. Chennai's Nicholas Patrick, the younger brother of National 4.7 laser champion Rufus, was the day's big surprise, taking the third spot with 11 points ahead of Vishnu Sujeesh and Vir Menon, also from Chennai. Overall placings (after first day, three races): 1. Vishnu Saravanan (CESC, Pune, 2+2+1) 5 pts, 2. Upamanyu Dutta (RBYC, Mumbai, 1+1+5) 7 pts, 3. Nicholas Patrick (TNSA, Chennai, 5+3+3) 11 pts, 4. Vishnu Sujeesh (TNSA, 4+5+8) 17 pts), 5. Aryaman Dutta (RBYC, Mumbai, 3+9+6) 18 pts, 6. Vir Menon (RMYC, Chennai) 19 pts, 7. Subham Pandey (CESC) 20 pts, 8. Shikhar Garg (NSS, Bhopal) 27 pts, 9. Ruqayya Nasrulla (TNSA) 34, 10. Leah Govias (RMYC) 37 pts . – Special Correspondent
