MADURAI: Around 500 sanitary workers, including temporary employees, went on a flash strike on Saturday demanding Pay Commission arrears and salary. However, they returned to work after the Corporation Commissioner, S. Sebastine, promised to look into the issue immediately.

The workers assembled at the Corporation office at around 7 a.m. protesting non-disbursal of arrears to the sanitary workers of North Zone. “The arrears had been given to workers of other zones. We have been pressing for it for the last two days. Though the Commissioner had assured to meet our demands, the officials were not complying with it,” the general secretary of Madurai Corporation Workers' Association, R. Rajagopal, said.

Mr. Rajagopal said that the monthly salary for temporary sanitary workers was not disbursed till Saturday.

“The office will not function tomorrow (Sunday) and day after (local holiday on Monday for Chithirai festival). How will the poor workers manage their families,” he asked. He complained that the salaries of the temporary workers, who get Rs.136 a day, were unduly getting delayed every month.

However, cleaning work was not affected in the city. The workers dispersed following the assurances from Mr. Sebastine.

“The dearness allowance arrears and salary for the temporary workers were given today. The Pay Commission arrears will be given soon,” he said.

The Commissioner said that the delay was because the officials were involved in election work. They could not prepare the papers on time.
