NEW DELHI: A young man allegedly possessing counterfeit currency notes has been arrested at Kashmere Gate in North Delhi. The police claim to have seized Rs.1 lakh in fake notes from him. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Qayyum (27), a resident of Malda in West Bengal. He had allegedly brought the notes of Rs.500 denominations from Malda for circulation in the Capital. The police suspect that the counterfeit notes were smuggled into the country through the Indo-Bangladesh border. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that during his stay in Delhi, he came in contact with a Bangladeshi national named Jabbar, who lives somewhere near the Indo-Bangladesh border. Jabbar initiated him into the business of fake notes. The police said Jabbar is the kingpin behind the racket and procures the notes through his links in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Qayyum would buy a fake Rs.100 note for Rs.40 and sell it for Rs.50. Other States Qayyum also allegedly supplied fake notes in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. He had roped in some persons from Malda to work as carriers. One of his close accomplices has been identified as Mohammad Hafiz, who accompanied him during the trips to Delhi, the police said. According to the police, Qayyum was earlier arrested along with his accomplice Gulam Kebris and Rabi-ul-Shekh at Ajmer in Rajasthan and remained in jail for over a year. After being released, he again started circulating fake notes.
