Raichur: S. Ayyappan, Secretary of Department of Agriculture and Research and Director-General of Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), has called upon agricultural universities and scientists to undertake need-based research programmes that address region-specific farmer issues and transfer relevant technology to enhance the income of the farming community. As chief guest at the first annual convocation of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) here on Saturday, he said though the country has achieved sustainable development in agriculture, the potential of rainfed areas has not been utilised fully. Development of rainfed areas must to be taken up on priority for shaping the future of the farming community, he said. Participating at the function, Minister for Agriculture Umesh V. Katti, who is the Pro-Chancellor of the university, gave away certificates and gold medals to students. As many as 93 postgraduate and 35 undergraduate students passed this year from the agricultural university. Shivakumar H. (B.Sc. Agriculture) received four gold medals; Mahitosh Pandey (B.Sc. Agriculture) received two gold medals; Deepak Kumar (B.tech. Agriculture) received four gold medals and two cash awards.
