Chitradurga: S.K. Basavarajan, MLA, said on Saturday that people were losing interest in theatre because of the proliferation of television channels. In the past, theatre was the primary means of entertainment for the people, he said. Speaking after inaugurating the two-day Rural Theatre Festival organised by Sri Guru Shiradi Sai Seva Sangha at the Ta. Ra. Su. Rangamandir here, Mr. Basavarajan said that the preservation of theatre was the responsibility of not only those involved in such activities and the Government but also of the people. For any theatre artiste, public support and appreciation is the biggest reward, without which they could not survive, he said. He urged the theatre personalities to make their shows more attractive for the audience. Kariyappa Malagi, lecturer, expressed happiness over the theatre gaining popularity in places like Bangalore and regretted that the same trend was not seen in other parts of the State. “Watching a play has become a rare phenomenon as most of the people have restricted themselves to watching films in cinema houses or television sets,” he said. Stating that the programmes like theatre festivals would go a long way in reviving the theatre-related activities, Mr. Malagi said that the plays could bring about social changes by highlighting some of the critical social problems.
