Assets of 28 MLAs up 120% since 2006

KOLKATA: The assets of 28 MLAs seeking re-election in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly election have grown by 120 per cent since the 2006 elections, according to the West Bengal Election Watch — the State chapter of the National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms.

While candidates of almost all major political parties have contributed towards the giant leap in growth of asset percentage, MLAs of the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) have ranked first with an asset increase by 330 per cent followed by the Congress at 236 per cent.

Analysed on the basis of the affidavits submitted by individual candidates to the Election Commission at the time of their filing nomination, the Congress candidate from Kandi, Apurba Sarkar, has topped the list, whose assets grew from Rs. 7 lakh in 2006 to Rs. 1.32 crore in 2011.
