An important milestone in the Ooty racing season

D. Radhakrishnan

Udhagamandalam: The 125th edition of the Ooty racing season at the sprawling high altitude race course in the heart of this hill station was witnessed by a good number of people including punters, casual visitors and tourists here on Saturday.

Speaking to The Hindu in between the nine races, the Chairman and Senior Steward of Madras Race Club (MRC), M.A.M. Ramaswamy, said the current season marked an important milestone in the chequered history of racing in this holiday destination.

He said the post centenary silver jubilee would be celebrated in a fitting manner. The celebrations would be held on May 7 on the eve of the Nilgiris Derby, the main event of the racing season. Steps would be taken to make the occasion memorable.

A request would be made to the district administration and others concerned to join hands with the MRC to make it an unforgettable occasion.

T. Gundan, former MLA, said the racing and the tourist season here have been synonymous.

H.M. Raju, former MLA, recalled that until a few decades ago no other activity had enlivened this hill station like horse racing. He said such milestones should not be allowed to go unnoticed.

Pradeep Mohan, partner of a departmental store, recalled that racing attracted a large number of people from various places and the mercantile community used to look forward to the season. He hoped that the sport would regain its past glory.

Prabhakar Rao, a long-time punter, said racing was an integral part of the summer tourist season here and a season sans racing was not considered to be complete.

Pointing out that the potential for promoting racing here was enormous, he hoped that the shortcomings would be ironed out and the course preserved properly.
