FELICITATION:BBMP employees, who have won awards, at a function in Bangalore on Sunday. BANGALORE: The number of people to be conferred with the prestigious Kempe Gowda Award appears to be increasing by the day. The final count of those who will be given the award at a function here on Monday is now 264 instead of the original 234. The announcement was made by Mayor S.K. Nataraj on Sunday. Kempe Gowda Day, to commemorate the contributions of the founder of the city, is being celebrated after four years. On Monday, the “Kempe Gowda Karaga” will take place with the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner in the procession that will move towards the temple in Lalbagh built by Kempe Gowda. All the four towers built by him will be decorated for the occasion and the “Kempe Gowda Divya Jyothi”, will be taken around the city. As a run-up to the event, on Kempe Gowda Jayanti on Saturday, 200 employees of the BBMP were awarded at a function for their distinguished services. Speaking during the occasion, Commissioner Siddaiah said that it was not enough only to get awards but employees should work towards ensuring peaceful living conditions for the citizens. On the gap in celebrations of the birth anniversary of Kempe Gowda, he said that the four-year hiatus was due to various reasons. Remembering the contributions of Kempe Gowda, Mr. Siddaiah said that Bangalore is one of the few cities that has thrived without being close to a river because Kempe Gowda built tanks in and around the city for both drinking and irrigation purposes. The Mayor said that political representatives and officials should work together towards improving the city. Two books on the city's founder were released — one a comic “Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda” by D. Lingaiah, and the other “Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda Hagu Athana Vamshastharu” by V.S. Puttaswamy.
