Congress MLAs raise Water Bill with Chavan

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Congress legislators met Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday to apprise him of their discontent with the hasty passing of the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2011 last week in the State Assembly.

Congress sources alleged that the chief concern was in Vidarbha, where the farmers would be deprived of water which would be diverted to industries.

The Chief Minister is also reportedly unhappy with the Bill, which vests power in a high-power committee (HPC) against which no appeal can be made in any other court, tribunal or any legal forum. Congress legislators said that the Bill would have an adverse effect on the party's campaign for the elections to the zilla parishads later this year.

The MLAs protested against the haste in which the Bill was passed, and demanded that it should be sent to a joint select committee for review.

Otherwise, it should be kept in hold till some debate was initiated. Mr. Chavan has assured the legislators of a suitable course of action.
