TIRUPATI: Ramachandrapuram mandal in Chittoor district will soon get 60 eco-san (ecological sanitation) toilets as part of a massive sanitation drive. While five toilets have been completed in Gangireddipalle, another six are in various stages of progress. Nutrients for crops Unlike the regular toilets, the ‘eco-san' facility involves recycling of nutrients from urine and faeces to improve soil fertility and enhancement of crop productivity, thus indirectly discouraging the usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Rural Organisation for Poverty Eradication (ROPE), a Tirupati-based NGO, is implementing the project titled ‘Environment protection and health improvement of rural poor through promotion of eco-san toilets', with financial assistance from UK-based ‘The Water Project'. According to ROPE president V. Munichandra Reddy, the project involves not only construction, but also capacity building to the community and schoolchildren on health and hygiene.
