Survey of agricultural land opposed

Dissent:Farmers from Yergera village staging a dharna in Raichur on Monday.

Raichur: Farmers of Yergera in Raichur taluk staged a dharna in protest against the Forest Department's move to take up survey of agricultural land in the village, which comes under the reserve forest.

Hundreds of farmers, who reached the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday, demanded that the Government suspend the survey.

In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister and submitted to the district administration, they said the notified forest land in the village, was converted into agricultural land long ago. The department concerned had given “pattas” (ownership rights) to the farmers as well, they said.

The protesters said the Forest Department's move would harm the interests of the poor farmers.

Hundreds of farmers would lose their agricultural land in case of de-notification of agricultural land into forest land.
