KANNUR: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has retained two panchayat wards in the byelections held here on April 10. The byelections were held in Ward III of the Aralam panchayat and Ward III of the Karyad panchayat. Lissy John Mulankuzhi of the Congress won the byelection by a margin of 133 votes against Rosamma Muriyankari of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the ward in the Aralam panchayat. The byelection necessitated by the resignation of the Congress ward member Mini Joshi was marred by poll-related incidents. Repoll had been ordered in a booth after ink was allegedly poured inside the ballot box. In Ward III of the Karyad panchayat, Haseena Pural of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) defeated her CPI(M) rival O.P. Ajitha by a margin of 320 votes. The byelection followed the resignation of IUML ward member K.V. Ramla.
