YSR Congress Party leaders stage sit-in protest

Staff Reporter

In protest mode:Police thwarting efforts of former Mayor T. Sakunthala and other party workers of YSR Congress to burn an effigy of Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy in Vijayawada on Monday.

VIJAYAWADA: The YSR Congress Party leaders staged a sit-in protest against the alleged apathy of the police department in investigating attack on MBA student Sirisha, at Lenin Centre here on Monday.

The city police foiled their attempts to burn effigy of Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy. A heated argument ensued between the police and YSR Congress activists at Lenin Centre as the former suggested the latter to remove saree draped to the effigy.

The activists, instead, raised slogans against the Home Minister, and insisted the police they be allowed to burn the effigy. The issue died down when the police walked away with the effigy.

YSR Congress leader Tadi Sakuntala said the police were more interested in “protecting the effigies” rather than women in the city. The women in the State were ashamed of electing a woman who utterly failed to serve as the Home Minister. The crime against the women was on the rise despite the fact that Home Ministry was headed by a woman, she said, adding that the Home Minister was more interested in ‘danda' (business) of her son Karthik Reddy.

The protestors demanded resignation of Ms. Sabita Indra Reddy, and arrest of those who attacked Ms. Sirisha.
