Shimoga: Activists of the Janata Dal (Secular) staged a protest at Kudumallige in Tirtahalli taluk on Monday demanding that the government undertake road-widening work in the village. National Highway 13 that connects Mangalore with Sholapur passes through the village. Road accidents have become common here owing to heavy traffic. The highway widening work in the village limits and work on the bridge on the outskirts of the village should be taken up at the earliest to ensure free movement of vehicles, they said. The activists blocked the road, disrupting the movement of vehicles for some time. They also tried to gherao president of the State BJP unit K.S. Eshwarappa who was passing through the same road. Engineers from National Highway Authority who arrived at the spot received a memorandum from the activists. The officials promised to take steps to address the problem in a month. Janata Dal (S) leaders R. Madan and Nakunji Sudhakar took part in the protest.
