Staff Correspondent

They are charged with murdering

11 sex workers

Tumkur: In a major breakthrough, Tumkur police arrested two serial killers, one a woman, on Monday, and managed to solve the mystery behind 11 murder cases in Tumkur and Bangalore districts.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Inspector-General of Police, Central Range, Kamal Pant, said that the arrested are Raghavendra (35) and Prema (45), both belonging to Thirthahalli taluk in Shimoga district. He said the accused are charged with murdering 11 sex workers between March and November 2010 in Bangalore and Tumkur. They were running a brothel at R.T. Nagar in Bangalore, said Mr. Pant.

Bodies of three women were found in Bellavi, Kallambella and Tumkur Rural police station limits in September and October 2010.

A special police team was constituted to crack the murder cases. The two accused, along with one Sundaresh, used to pick up sex workers from Majestic and other areas and give them soft drinks or beer mixed with sleeping tablets. When the sex workers dropped unconscious, they would first take away their jewellery and then kill them. The bodies would be placed in gunny bags and transported into their vans and disposed of. Sundaresh is absconding, said Mr. Pant.

Police have recovered a van and 100 gm gold from the accused. Of the 11 bodies recovered, only six have been identified.

A cash prize of Rs. 75,000 was given to the police team who nabbed the accused.
