Against eviction: The police removing leaders of the Guruvayur Kshethra Nagara Vikasana Samithi who were protesting against the land acquisition procedures around the Sreekrishna Temple on Monday.
Thrissur: Traders and public, led by the Guruvayur Kshethra Nagara Vikasana Samithi, on Monday disrupted the land acquisition procedures around the Sreekrishna Temple.
The agitators stopped the officials of the Revenue Department and the Guruvayur Devaswom Board from the procedures to evict shops and houses situated within 100 m of the temple. They alleged that the land acquisition done by the Devaswom was without any scientific planning.
The protesters demanded the Devaswom to stop the land acquisition and to rehabilitate those who had already been evicted. They were later removed by the police.
The police arrested T.N. Murali, O.K.R. Manikandan, P.V. Mohammed Yasin, Ravi Chankath and A. Venugopal, the leaders of the Guruvayur Kshethra Nagara Vikasana Samithi.
Shops, lodges closed
Shops and lodges in the vicinity of the Sreekrishna temple remained shut on Monday in protest against the arrest of the samithi leaders.
The samithi said it would continue the agitation till the Guruvayur Devaswom announced a proper rehabilitation package for the evictees. A rally was taken out in the town in protest against the arrest.
