dated April 19, 1961: Tamils in Ceylon

Mr. S. B. Adityan, Leader of Nam Tamizhar (We Tamils) Movement, wanted that the Ceylon Tamils issue should be taken to the United Nations. Commenting on the declaration of emergency in Ceylon and banning of the Federal Party there, Mr. Adityan, in a statement said in Madras on April 18: “The Tamils of Ceylon have been denied by force their democratic right of self-determination. This has roused the indignation of the Tamil people living in India and other parts of the world. The Indian Government can no longer say that the matter does not concern them. The issue is ripe for raising in the United Nations and I hope Prime Minister Nehru would take the initiative.” Mr. M.P. Sivagnana Gramani, Leader of Tamil Arasu Kazhagam, described the proclamation of emergency in Ceylon and the banning of the Federal Party there as contrary to the U.N. Declaration of Human rights, and asked Prime Minister Nehru to protest against “this racial suppression.”
