Udhagamandalam
Udhagamandalam: With opposition to the installation of sculptures of animals inside the Government Botanical Garden (GBG) here mounting, concerned citizens and representatives of various organizations including the Tamil Nadu Green Movement, the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam and the Nilgiris Environment and Animal Protection Society gathered in front of the garden on Tuesday and registered their protest by distributing handbills which condemned the ‘blind' decision. ‘Lack of aesthetics' The protesters pointed out that displaying the sculptures of animals instead of showcasing the natural wealth of the heritage garden to domestic and foreign tourists reflected a lack of aesthetics. It undermined the importance of the internationally-renowned garden. Later, speaking to The Hindu they pointed out that the most attractive feature of the garden was the sprawling lawn just across the threshold. It was the most coveted backdrop for photographs and videos. By positioning figurines of a group of monkeys near the lower head of the lawn its beauty and importance had been affected. Reputation They hoped that the damage done would be reversed before the reputation of the garden is permanently tarnished. Meanwhile the Joint Director of Horticulture in-charge J.Haldorai said that the sentiments of the citizens would be respected with regard to the issue. If the people are not in favour of the figurines being kept in such places they would be removed.
