HYDERABAD: Animal rights activist Amala Akkineni on Wednesday urged Deputy Speaker Nadendla Manohar to take steps to ensure that the Tiger habitat in Kawwal Wildlife Sanctuary in Adilabad is protected.
Accompanied by Imran, convener of Hyderabad Tiger Protection Society, Ms. Amala met the Deputy Speaker and said that four tigers were sighted in the sanctuary. She wanted the Deputy Speaker, who is the Chairman of AP Legislature Committee on Wildlife and Forests, to initiate steps for protection of wildlife.
She hoped that the Government would take steps to make the sanctuary secure and safe for the tiger population. The duo urged the Government to re-constitute the AP State Wildlife Advisory Board.
Kawwal wildlife sanctuary is situated 260 km from Hyderabad and occupies an area of 892 sq. km.
It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1965 and is the oldest one in the State. It is a perfect tiger habitat with dense bamboo undergrowth and adequate prey population. Wildlife protection activists have underscored the need to accord Tiger reserve status for Kawwal for better management and conservation of tigers.
