Chennai: K.G. Chaitanya drew with Vasantha Ruba Varman to maintain a half-point lead in the boys' category at the end of the eighth round of the Vel's University State sub-junior chess championship. Three shared lead in the girls' section. Michelle Catherina and Bala Kanamma drew with each other on the top board to finish the day on 6.5 points, while N. Akshaya defeated Divya Lakshmi to join the duo on the leader board. Chaitanya's draw with Vasantha got him to seven points, half-a-point ahead of five players. Important results (round eight): Boys: Vasantha Ruba Varman (6.5) drew with K.G. Chaitanya (7), Mugil Jayavel (6.5) drew with Sakthivel Pandian (6.5), R. Ganesh (5.5) lost to Akash Iyer (6.5), Karthikeyan Murali (5) lost to G. Akash (6.5). Girls: Bala Kanamma (6.5) drew with Michelle Catherina (6.5), G. Aarthi (6) drew with G.K. Monisha (6), N. Akshaya (6.5) bt Divya Lakshmi (5.5), Hemalakshmi (5) lost to M. Mahalakshmi (6) .
