Police were intentionally delaying production of the arrested leaders in court, says counsel

VISAKHAPATNAM: Counsel for the top Maoist leaders in the Gunukurayi encounter case wanted speedy trail in the case, in a petition submitted to the Judicial First Class Magistrate of Chintapalli J. Naga Seshaiah on Thursday.

During the course of arguments, the prosecution said that the four leaders Kobad Gandhy, N. Ravi Sharma, Prasad Singh and Amit Bagchi along with Chedda Bhushanam, who was recently arrested by the Orissa police, would be produced in the court on April 27.

The magistrate separated the case against seven accused, all tribal people who were allegedly members of Maoist party, which would be committed to the District Sessions Court.

Counsel for the Maoist party leaders Palleti Appa Rao argued that the police were including in the Gunukurayi case the every top Maoist leader arrested and were intentionally delaying production of the leaders for the case to be committed to the District Court, by quoting security reasons.

Assistant Public Prosecutor M. Adinarayana said there were certain constraints for the police as two Maoist leaders were lodged in jails outside AP and two at the Visakhapatnam Central Jail while Chedda Bhushanam was to be brought from Orissa.

The prosecution assured the court that the five would be produced on April 27.
