BIJAPUR: The zilla panchayat will submit a proposal to the State Government seeking permission to set up task forces to tackle the drinking water scarcity. The decision was taken at a general body meeting here on Thursday. There was also a proposal to give permission to every zilla panchayat member to drill 15 borewells in his/her ward. During the discussion, a few members said that it was essential to form task forces as the problem was very severe in the district. Often, the MLAs and MLCs were not available for help. Zilla Panchayat vice-president Shrishailgouda Biradar said that 170 villages in the district were suffering from water shortage, in which 67 are in Bijapur, 12 in Basavanbagewadi, 48 in Muddebihal, 31 in Indi, and 12 in Sindagi taluk. The zilla panchayat has already submitted a proposal to the government to release Rs 4.49 crore as aid. “As the government has responded favourably, the funds would be released to Assembly constituencies for works such as repairing pipelines and drilling new borewells,” he added.
