IN A STATE OF NEGLECT:The debris of the compound wall has not been cleared in Babugudde even after one year.

MANGALORE: The heavy downpour on Thursday morning made the condition worse for Vidya and other members of a family residing at a corner off the Babugudda Link Road. About knee-deep water got accumulated in front of their house. A part of the compound wall in front of their house also collapsed.

Being literally cut off from the link road, Vidya and other inmates toiled for nearly three hours to flush out the accumulated water and clear the debris of the collapsed compound wall. “We are anxious of the problems that would occur because of rain in the coming days,” says Ms. Vidya. With one end of the Babugudda Link Road being closed after the new concrete road was laid at Marnamikatta, people have to pass through the lane in front of Ms. Vidya's house that connects the nearby railway bridge. The problem started with a heavy rain in November 2010. “A part of the compound wall of an old house collapsed and the road became slushy,” says Nandini who lives in the area. Water entered the houses of Ms. Vidya, Ms. Nandini and her neighbour Pushpa. “With every rain, water from the road enters our houses and makes it difficult for us to move out,” says Ms. Nandini.

Following a complaint in November, a Town Planning Department official came to the area and directed the residents of the old house to clear the debris of the compound wall. “But nothing has been done so far,” says Vijith, another resident.

“We have even putforth our problem before our councillor K.B.K. Vijayalakshmi. She is yet to respond,” says Ms. Pushpa

MCC Assistant Executive Engineer Ganesh says he has not received any complaints. “But we will look into the problem,” Mr. Ganesh says.
