Chikmagalur records negative trend in population growth

This time, the provisional data shows a population of 11,37,753


Hassan: Chikmagalur district stands unique in the State if trends in population growth recorded in the Census 2011 are taken into consideration. As per the provisional population totals released by the Directorate of Census Operations, Chikmagalur is the only district which recorded decadal variation in population below the zero mark. The decadal population variation in Chikmagalur during 2001-11 was recorded at - 0.28.

The district recorded a population of 11,40,905 in the last census held in 2001. Whereas this time, the provisional data shows that the district has a population of 11,37,753.

In the past 10 years, the population of the district has not gone up, instead decreased by 3,152 people. With that, the growth recorded is - 0.28.

This was against the growth of State's population at the rate of 15.67. Chikmagalur has shown this trend of negative growth for the first time since 1921. During 1911-21, the growth was -1.45.

Chikmagalur Deputy Commissioner N. S. Channappa Gowda said that there was an instruction from the Directorate of the Census Operation not to comment on the trends.

The directorate would release taluk-wise statistics, he added.

During the 10 years between 1991 and 2001, the decadal variation in the district was 12.15.

Interestingly, between 2001 and 2011, there has been a decline in the number of males and upsurge in the number of females.

In 2001, there were 5,74,911 males and 5,65,994 females. In the latest census, the number of males has gone down to 5,67,483, while that of females has gone up to 5,70,270. As a result, the sex ratio, which was 984 females per 1,000 males in 2001, has increased to 1,005 females per 1,000 males.

The population density has gone up in all districts of the State, except Chikmagalur, in the latest census. In Chikmagalur, the population density was 158 per sq. km. in 2001 and it remained so in 2011. The literacy rate in the district has gone up from 72.20 in 2001 to 79.24 per cent in 2011. Among the males, the literacy rate has gone up from 80.25 (2001) to 85.66 per cent (2011). The literacy rate among females increased from 64.01 (2001) to 72.88 per cent (2011).
