MALAPPURAM: The 10-day festival at the Navamukunda temple at Tirunavaya concluded on Saturday with an ‘Arat' on the banks of the Bharatapuzha. People from various parts of the State witnessed the procession in spite of the summer showers. The idol of Vishnu was taken out on a caparisoned elephant, to the accompaniment of ‘Panchavadyam,' around 6 p.m. The centuries-old temple, on the northern bank of the Bharatapuzha, is managed by a trust headed by P.K.S. Raja, head of the Zamorin family, erstwhile rulers of Kozhikode. The temple is known for the immersion of the ashes of the dead in the Bharatapuzha and for offering ‘Pithrubali,' a ritual propitiating one's ancestors.
