‘University research leads to economic development'

VC lauds B.Tech students selected for internship at Harvard

THANJAVUR: "A qualitative growth in higher education sector is vital for applied and basic university research in India,” said B. Hari Gopal, Adviser and Head, Science & Engineering Research Council (SERC), Department of Science & Technology, here on Saturday.

Delivering the 10th University Day address at Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University here, Mr.Hari Gopal highlighted the need for research that gives breakthrough solutions as the Green and White revolutions did for the growth of agriculture and providing food security.

The Department of Science and Technology is encouraging research and development activities by offering financial support and roping in industrial partners to ensure that university research leads to product development. Applied research propels the economic growth. He doled out tips on developing affordable products in the sectors of healthcare, automobile, food production and storage.

While presenting the annual report of SASTRA, Vice Chancellor R. Sethuraman congratulated the research faculty members of SASTRA for securing 20 projects from funding agencies at Rs.7.40 crore, taking the total number of ongoing projects at SASTRA to 45. Infrastructure facilities have been provided to the university at Rs.30.60 crore. He praised 34 B. Tech. students who have been selected for the Indian Academy Science Fellowship this summer and 11 B. Tech. students for research internship at Harvard and MIT. Over 2,200 students have been placed in over 65 companies through campus recruitment.

M. Kaushik, a B. Tech. Mechanical Engineering student, was conferred the Kamakoti Award for the best outgoing student for 2011.

Scholarships worth Rs.65 lakh, scholarship for students' semester abroad programme worth Rs.27 lakh and student welfare assistance worth Rs.19.80 lakh have been distributed this academic year, the Vice Chancellor said.
