MALAPPURAM: A journalism student with obvious concerns for his environs is set to go on a six-day fast here against the use of Endosulfan pesticide. Abdul Bais, 18, from Chattipparamba near here, will launch his Satyagraha in front of the District Collectorate on Sunday. He said a large number of students had expressed solidarity with him. A first-year BA mass communication student at Government College, Kalpetta, he was moved by the plight of the Endosulfan victims during his recent visits to Kasaragod. He has been visiting Kasaragod as part of making a short-film on the dangers of Endosulfan. “The faces of Endosulfan victims, particularly the children, have been haunting me ever since I visited the district. And this Satyagraha is the very least I can do to awaken the conscience of the student community against the havoc wreaked by this diabolic substance,” Mr. Bais said. A proactive youth who wants to feel the pulse of the society, Mr. Bais was in local news for bringing out a news magazine alone. For two years, he has been bringing out ‘Sathyapadham', a monthly news magazine with local news and features. Pledge Meanwhile, a meeting convened by the district administration here on Saturday decided to garner maximum support for the anti-Endosulfan day to be observed on Monday (April 25). Additional District Magistrate K.V. Vasudevan presided over the meeting. An anti-Endosulfan pledge will be administered at a function outside the Civil Station at 11 a.m. on Monday. Minister for Local Self Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty will administer the pledge. Participation of various youth and cultural organisations in the district would be ensured for the movement against Endosulfan, said Mr. Vasudevan. Members of Parliament and Assembly from the district would also attend the function, said District Information Officer V.P. Sulabha. District Medical Officer K. Sakeena would lead public awareness sessions against Endosulfan. Awareness classes would be held in all health centres in the district. District Collector P.M. Francis on Saturday requested the participation of local body members and voluntary organisations in the movement against Endosulfan.
