Floating book fair from May 12

On board a German ship in Tuticorin

Tuticorin: The world's largest floating book fair will be open to public following the arrival of a German ship, Logos Hope, at V.O. Chidambaranar Port here on May 12. According to a press release, the ship is operated by GBA Ships, an international charitable organisation. The fair will be open to the public till May 23. The vessel is 132.5 meters long and is on her maiden voyage to India. She is expected to sail into the coastal waters of Tuticorin on May 11.

This new and large vessel stocks a wide range of books. It will have 5,000 books on different titles at affordable prices. The range of sections at the book fair include science, sports, hobbies, cookery, arts, medicine, dictionaries, languages and philosophy. It aims to attract families with atlases and the like. An air-conditioned Visitor Experience Deck is also open to the people to explore ideas. From the welcome area, which introduces the new vessel through a short movie and interactive displays, to the international café, which has ice cream, drinks and snacks for sale, there is sure to be something in store for each and every visitor, the release said. It is a rare opportunity for book lovers. The fair will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entry fee is Rs. 50 per visitor and a free book will be given while leaving the ship. Entry is free for children under 12 years of age. These children must be accompanied by an adult. Identity cards are required to enter the port area. The organisers said that more than 400 volunteers from 50 counties, including India, were working in the vessel. It was being berthed at Colombo in the dry dock for maintenance works. It would dock in Kochi from May 25 to June 21 and then in Vishakapatnam from July 26 to August 8.
