Car coming from Kodaikanal suddenly skids off Ghat road near Iruttatrupallam

KODAIKANAL: Four members of a family were killed on the spot and one child was injured when a car in which they were travelling fell into a 200-feet deep gorge near Dum Dum Rock here on Saturday evening.

The deceased were Pari (34), an employee in the reservation section of Southern Railway in Nagercoil and a resident of Kokkirakulam in Tirunelveli district, his wife Vinayaga Sundari (33), his three-and-half-year-old daughter Viva, and his mother Subbammal (54).

Another daughter Riya (7) was admitted to Dindigul GH after being given emergency treatment at Batlagundu GH and later referred to Apollo Hospital in Madurai.

The doctors in Dindigul GH said her condition was critical.

The family members were returning to Tirunelveli after a three-day tour to Kodaikanal, the police said.

Eye witnesses said that the car coming from Kodaikanal suddenly skidded off the Ghat road at a deep curve and fell into the deep gorge near Iruttatrupallam, few kilometres away from Dum Dum Rock.

On seeing the accident, youths who followed the car in motorcycles searched the car in the gorge. Due to the impact of the sudden fall, the children were thrown out of the car.

The youth rescued the children from slopes of the gorge and sent them to Batlagundu Government Hospital. Viva succumbed to her injuries in Dindigul GH. Heavy rain rocked the hill since afternoon.

A garlic-laden lorry fell into a gorge near the accident spot a few months ago, local people said.

The police, fire service personnel and forest guards were engaged in removing the bodies from the mangled remains of the car.
