Five killed, seven injured in collision near Puttur

The LPG tanker which overturned after hitting a van near Nelyadi near Puttur on Saturday.

MANGALORE: Five persons, including three of a family, were killed in a road accident near Nelyadi in Puttur traffic police station limits on Saturday.

The accident occurred when a van was hit by a LPG tanker. The drivers of the tanker and the van died in the accident. Seven persons were admitted to the A.J. Hospital.

Members of Bhoja Shetty's family from Kallamundkuru were returning home in the van after visiting Kukke Subramanya. The tanker was proceeding towards the Shiradi Ghat.

The LPG tanker hit the van near Nelyadi and dragged it away for some distance. The tanker and the van overturned after the accident. Bhoja Shetty (85), Rati Shetty (60), Shambhavi Shetty (45), van driver Guruprasad Bhat (38), and tanker driver Kannan (64) from Salem died on the spot, the police said.

Following the accident, personnel from Fire and Emergency Services, and HPCL's emergency response team rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. They rescued seven persons after clearing the two vehicles from the spot.

Traffic was disrupted on the road for one hour. The police said there was no LPG leak.

The condition of the injured was stable, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Puttur) Rohini Katoch. The names of the injured have been given as Mohan Shetty (52), Rohini Shetty (40), Santosh Alva (18), Vasantha Shetty (45), Aniketh (10), Hardhik Ray (15), and Karthik Alva (12).
