Shimoga: Quality as well as reach of distance education courses can be enhanced by employing modern technology in preparing study material, Manjulika Srivastav of Indira Gandhi National Open University has said.

She was speaking after inaugurating a two-day workshop on preparing study material organised by the Directorate of Distance Education of Kuvempu University on the Jnana Sahyadri campus at Shankaraghatta on Saturday.

Distance education was a boon to those who could not pursue education offered in regular mode owing to various factors. It was the responsibility of the institutes offering distance education course to provide quality study material to students. It had been planned to take distance education to 15 per cent of the nation's population by the end of 2012, she said.

Swaraj Basu, Professor, IGNOU, said that the quality of the study material prepared for distance education should be useful for students pursuing courses in regular mode also. As the purpose of distance education was to disseminate and share knowledge, priority should be accorded to prepare study material of good standards, he added.

Registrar B. Krishnappa, who presided over the function, said that the new courses offered by Kuvempu University in distance education mode had evoked good response.

Director of Distance Education M. Venkateshwarulu, Special Officer of Distance Education A. Mohan Ram, and B.K. Biswas, professor, IGNOU, were present.
