Coimbatore: The Prohibition Enforcement Wing police registered 1,057 cases, arrested 1,002 persons, including 134 women, in a three-day, State-wide drive conducted between April 22 and 24, according to a release issued by C.K. Gandhirajan, Additional Director General of Police.

The police also seized 89,069 litres of illicit arrack, 19,920 litres of fermented wash, 731 litres of toddy, 2,237 litres spurious/excise- and duty- evaded liquor bottles and also 15 vehicles.

In Coimbatore and nearby districts, the police registered 423 cases and arrested 367 persons including 24 women. They seized 69 litres of illicit arrack, 130 litres of toddy, 851 spurious/excise- and duty- evaded liquor bottles and two vehicles. Persons involved in brewing and selling illicit arrack and adulterated liquor would be detained under Goondas Act, the release said.
