Coimbatore
The Coimbatore Corporation is confident of overcoming the setback the rain has caused to the progress of storm water drain and underground drainage works in the city. COIMBATORE: The recent rain has brought cheer to the city residents. But it has also filled up the trenches where the Coimbatore Corporation removed earth to construct storm water drains or lay underground drainage pipelines. Packages At present, the Corporation is engaged in implementing seven packages of the storm water drainage project and five packages of the UGD project. Both are part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme. The water-filled trenches are expected to further delay the works, which were progressing slowly or stalled because of the absence of staff and Model Code of Conduct. A few days after polling on April 13, the Election Commission of India relaxed the norms saying local bodies were allowed to proceed with works that were in progress at the time of implementing the Code. The announcement allowed the Coimbatore Corporation to resume works but then the rain has interrupted the works. No setback Sources in the Corporation say that the rain has not caused any setback. The water will be pumped out and works resumed at the earliest. It is too small a disruption in the works to warrant a mention, they say and add that works will go on as per schedule.
