Directive on Pulmedu tragedy

Special Correspondent

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the superior police officer in charge of Sabarimala to file an affidavit regarding the real cause of the Pulmedu stampede which claimed 102 lives in January.

The Bench comprising Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice S.S. Satheesachandran gave the direction while considering a suo motu proceeding initiated in connection with the tragedy. The government submitted before the court that the Crime Branch inquiry into the accident was in its final stages.

The government pointed out that the High Court had turned down its request to spare the service of a sitting judge of the High Court or a district judge for appointing as a judicial commission.

The proposal to appoint a retired judge as judicial commission was under the active consideration of the government.
