Meerut DIG, DM transferred

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: Meerut's Deputy Inspector-General/SSP Jai Narain Singh was suspended and District Magistrate Subhash Chandra Verma transferred on Tuesday, two days after communal violence erupted in Meerut town. Action against the district officials was announced by Chief Minister Mayawati after reviewing the situation here on Monday.

Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told reporters here on Tuesday that the officials were punished for reaching late at the site of the communal violence in Qazipura village in Meerut on Sunday.

Action followed after a detailed report was submitted to the Chief Minister by the Special D-G (Law & Order).

Violence and arson in the village and surrounding areas followed after a local cleric was reportedly assaulted by some village youths. The police said 21 persons have been arrested for indulging in violence and arson.
