Surrendered ULFA leader held
Sushanta Talukdar
GUWAHATI: The police have arrested Sailen Dutta Konwar, a surrendered ULFA leader-turned managing director of Asomiya Khobor in connection with an incident of indiscriminate firing outside the residence of the owner of another Assamese daily, Niyomiya Barta, at Hatigarh here on Tuesday. No one was hurt. Senior Superintendent of Police Dipak Choudhury told TheHindu that Mr. Dutta Konwar was arrested on “credible evidence” of his involvement.
The police suspect that it could be the fallout of business rivalry. Mr. Dutta Konwar, however, reportedly denied his involvement.
Three persons reportedly went to Mr. Talukdar's residence on two motorbikes and fired 11 rounds from an assault rifle, suspected to be AK-47. Mr. Choudhury, however, said the police were yet to confirm the type of weapon used.
