Tumkur: In many parts of Tumkur district, fluoride and nitrate content in drinking water obtained from borewells and open wells is above the permissible limits. A survey conducted jointly by the Tumkur Zilla Panchayat and the Panchayat Raj Engineering Division, Tumkur, has revealed high nitrate and fluoride content in drinking water samples obtained from borewells and open wells. The exercise carried out by the Panchayat Raj Engineering Division has found that 6.35 per cent of drinking water sources in the district contained high nitrate content, 9.94 per cent of the sources had high fluoride content and water in 7.14 per cent of the sources was hard. Speaking to The Hindu, Kotresh, Senior Geologist of the Mines and Geology Department, said, “The density of borewells for irrigation and drinking water has increased in the district.” Permissible limits The permissible limits for flouride is 1.0 to 1.5 milligram per litre. For nitrate, the maximum limit is 45 milligram per litre and total hardness is 300 milligram to 600 milligram per litre.
