TIRUNELVELI: Parents of 10th and 12th standard students have started seeking the intervention of Collector M. Jayaraman against the schools compelling their children to attend classes during the summer vacation also. After the annual examinations were over by the first and second week of April, most of the higher secondary schools here are functioning with the SSLC and Plus Two students attending classes regularly during their summer vacation, denying them an opportunity to relax even for a brief period with their relatives, particularly their grandparents, following a year-long hectic academic activities. And these ‘special classes' are likely continue till May 30. After taking rest for about 24 hours, the students will return to their routine on June 1. Though the managements of the schools argue that they were conducting the classes with the consent of the students and their parents, most of the parents complain that they are being compelled to send their children to the summer classes, failing which will result in serious consequences including expulsion of the ‘absentee' from the school. When the parents appealed to the Collector and the Chief Educational Officer last year in this regard, the CEO's office, following an instruction from Dr. Jayaraman, immediately announced that no matriculation or aided school should conduct classes during the summer vacation. “We expect similar instruction either from the Collector or from the CEO so that our children can be in a relaxed mood at least for a month, which will help them to be prepared physically and mentally for a year-long hard work during the next academic year,” said a parent, a government employee, whose daughter scored 482 in the SSLC examination without attending any special class or private tuition. Most of the employed parents justify their demand with an emotional reason that the summer vacation provides them an opportunity for a meet between their parents and their children. “Whenever my parents, living in our native place in Thiruvallur district, meet their grandchildren during the vacation, I can see some kind of rejuvenation in them. They are happy when they spend time with our children for about ten or fifteen days. Though we can extend financial and medical support even as we're here, I firmly believe that the emotional support we give during the summer vacation is most important and it will certainly keep them in good health for long. At the same time, my parents' vast experience and their simple living would be a lifetime lesson for my children,” said a bank employee, whose plea for complete vacation for his daughter was summarily turned down by a leading matriculation school here. “Get TC” “The principal even asked me to get my daughter's transfer certificate immediately if I prefer to press my demand (for summer vacation).”
