MANGALORE: Two brothers were allegedly assaulted on Saturday by six men in an attempt to coerce them into refraining from pursuing a departmental inquiry ordered against a sub-inspector of police. The accused wanted them to settle for “a compromise” in the case. Joyal Vas, 20, and his brother Joy Prajwal Vas, 17, were allegedly assaulted near their house. The assailants allegedly warned them against giving statements to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) who is conducting the departmental inquiry ordered against Mangalore Rural Police sub-inspector Prakash. The brothers had been admitted to a hospital. Mr. Prakash is facing a departmental inquiry (notice of February 23, 2011) following allegations that he tortured and harassed Mr. Joyal, his father Justin Vas and the latter's friend Gangadhar Shetty on June 2, 2010. The three filed a complaint with the police in this connection on July 8, 2010 (Mr. Shetty has since withdrawn his complaint against Mr. Prakash). Mr. Joyal said that he and his brother were riding a motorcycle when four men stopped them near the burial ground in Adyar Padavu. According to Mr. Joyal, Prakash Pereira, one of the assailants, told him: “If you go to the commissioner's office and give statements we will burn your house.” A case has been registered under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 and 324 (assault with weapons), against Prakash Pereira, Francis Fernandes and others.
