Convincing wins for Kottayam, Ernakulam

THODUPUZHA: Kottayam and Ernakulam scored easy wins in the quarterfinal to move into the boys semfinals of the 28th Sree Gokulam State Youth basketball championships here on Thursday.

Kottayam made short work of Ernakulam 40-20 while Thrissur had it easy against Kozhikode winning 38-15.

However, the girls' quarterfinals were a lot closer. Kozhikode edged past Thrissur 53-48 and Kannur overcame Kasaragod 43-41 in the quarterfinals. Kottayam also entered the semifinals with an easy 36-15 win over Wayanad.

The results (quarterfinals): Boys: Kottayam 40 (Ajith Kumar 14) bt Ernakulam 20; Thrissur 38 (Abdul Majeed 10, Ashish Mathew 10) bt Kozhikode 15 (S. Sourabh 11). Girls: Kozhikode 53 (Rhea Jinendran 11, N. Athuyla 10) bt Thrissur 48 (Aswathy S.Thampy 13, Minnu George 10); Kannur 43 (Chippy Joshy 13, Amrutha 12) bt Kasaragod 41 (Saranya Raja 10, Anju Jose 10); Kottayam bt Wayanad 36-15 .

Biju sizzles

A fine all-round performance by A.M. Biju enabled Renji CC beat Chasers CC by 65 runs in the TDCA ‘C' division cricket league at Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

Biju hit a sparkling century (150) as Renji posted a formidable 293. In reply, Chasers was restricted to 228 for nine as Biju chipped in with three wickets.

The scores: Renji CC 293 in 44.3 overs (A.M. Biju 150, Edison 38, Sarath 37, Vivek S. Nair four for 60, Giresh three for 66) bt Chasers CC 228 for nine in 45 overs (Sameesh 55, Krishnakumar 36, Lal Krishna four for 17, A.M. Biju three for 39) .

Thasleem shines

Mohd. Thasleem's valiant knock enabled Kasaragod to post a challenging score against Wayanad in the North Zone under-19 inter-district cricket tournament at the Municipal ground in Kasaragod on Thursday. Mohd. Thasleem (95) held the innings together as the host, after being put into bat, scored 290. A.S. Nipu (three for 35) was the pick of the bowlers for the visitor which scored 88 for three at close of play on the first day.

The scores: Kasaragod 290 in 66.1 overs (Mohd. Thasleem 95, P. Miqdad 45, A.S. Nipu three for 35, M. Subin three for 38, D. Gokul three for 78) vs Wayanad 88 for three in 28 overs (V.P. Abhijith 43 n.o.) .

Chess tournament

The Karippaparambil K.C. Sebastian memorial all-Kerala open chess tournament, organised by the Kottayam YMCA, begins at the YMCA's A.V. George Hall on Friday. The three-day tournament will be played under three categories: seniors, under-18 and under-12.

Easy for Tvm

Thiruvananthapuram defeated Alappuzha by six wickets in the South Zone under-16 women's cricket tournament at the DB College ground in Sasthamcotta on Thursday.

This was Thiruvananthapuram's second win in the four-team league and it qualified along with host Kollam for the State championship.

The scores: Alappuzha 100 in 19 overs (Arya 39, Anzina four for two) lost to Thiruvananthapuram 101 for four in 17.5 overs (Deepthi 38) .

DHS posts win

Directorate of Health Services defeated JSAC, Puthiyathura 3-1 in the Thiruvananthapuram district ‘B' division football league at the Central Stadium in Thiruvanathapuram on Thursday.

In another match, Subash FC and Jaihind FC played out a goalless draw.

Adithya does well

Wayanad rode on Adithya Balakrishnan's all-round performance (29 n.o. and six for 13) to crush Kannur by nine wickets in the North Zone under-16 women's cricket tournament at the St. Mary's College ground in Sulthan Bathery on Thursday.

The scores: Kannur 48 for eight in 20 overs (Adithya Balakrishnan six for 13) lost to Wayanad 49 for one in 7.2 overs (Adithya Balakrishnan 29 n.o.) .

Malappuram takes three points

Wayanad denied host Malappuram an outright win in the North Zone under-16 inter-district cricket tournament in Perinthalmanna on Thursday. Needing 74 for victory, Malappuram ran out of time and managed only 34 for two in five overs. Earlier, Wayanad after conceding a first innings lead of 56, batted slowly to score 129 off 71 overs. Malappuram took three points for the first innings lead.

At Medical College ground in Kozhikode, the Kozhikode vs Kannur match ended in a draw with Kannur taking the first innings lead.

The scores: Wayanad 111 & 129 in 71 overs (Arun six for 51, Safwan four for 24) drew with Malappuram 167 and 34 for two in five overs. Kozhikode 111 & 170 for nine (Rohan 37, Shamil six for 69) drew with Kannur 220 (Anees Ali 57, Shabin Pasha five for 37) .

Selection trials

The trials to select the Thiruvananthapuram district under-19 women's cricket team will be held at the Medical College ground on May 1. Players born on or after 1-9-1992 are eligible to take part in the trials. Interested players should report at the venue at 9 a.m. with their playing kits. Contact 0471-2570008 or 9645342642.

Chess tournament
