Sruta Kirti and Pranjala duo triumphs

HYDERABAD: Gunuganti Sruta Kirti and Yadlapalli Pranjala won the girls' doubles title in the Asian under-14 tennis tournament at Pune with a fluent 4-0, 4-0 win over Maharashtra pair of Snehal Mane and Mahima Arun Omkar.

Earlier in the semifinals, Sruta Kirti and Pranjala defeated Surapaneni Nidhi (Hyderabad) and Shreya Duttatreya Pai (Maharashtra) 4-0, 4-1.

However, Sruta Kirti bowed out in the women's singles, losing to Shameema 4-6, 4-6 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Coaching camp

Zubi Cricket Academy of Mother Land Society for Awareness, a non-profit organisation, will organise a year-long, free coaching camp in cricket for the under-privileged in and around Hyderabad at Amberpet Water Works Grounds here, according to Mr. B. Meraj.

Mr. A. K. Khan, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, will formally inaugurate the Academy and the camp on April 30. For details, call 040-24551932/9391041392.

GVMC posts win

Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation defeated Naval Dockyard by two wickets in the VDCA institutions league in Visakhapatnam. For GVMC A. Sunand scored 67 runs and M.C. Sekhar impressed with three wickets and a score of 32.

The scores: Naval Dockyard 143 in 25.1 overs (M.V.V.N. Raju 34, A. Prakash four for 23, M.C. Sekhar three for 27) lost to GVMC 144 for eight in 18.4 overs (A. Sunand 67, M.C. Sekhar 32, Venkatesh four for 36) .

Matches not held

In Visakhapatnam, both semifinals of the VJF-CMR inter-media cricket tournament, scheduled for Thursday at the Port stadium here could not be held due to wetness around the pitch, caused by the overnight rain. The semifinals would be held on Friday.

Athletics trials

Ranga Reddy District Amateur Athletics Association will conduct selection trials in Hyderabad on May 1 to pick the team for the AP inter-district senior and youth meet to be held at Warangal on May 7 and 8. Call Stanley Jones (93466 16266) for details.
