Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: Lok Sabha member Botcha Jhansi Lakshmi has asked officials and elected representatives to give wide publicity in each village about TTD's annual Kalyanamasthu (mass marriages) programme, scheduled on May 20, and make it a success.

Speaking at the awareness meeting on the programme at TTD Kalyanamandapam here on Saturday, Dr. Jhansi Lakshmi said that it was introduced by late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in 2004, for the benefit of hapless poor and so far, during the last five phases of Kalyanamasthu, 34,000 marriages were performed in the state.

Collector M. Veerabrahmaiah said that the awareness programme was organised to involve officials and elected representatives in the annual event. He asked tehsildars, MPDOs, anganwadis and village organisations to give wide publicity, and motivate the eligible poor to utilise the opportunity. The last date for submission of applications along with age proof and a letter of consent from parents concerned is May 15. Brides willing to marry must complete 18 years of age, and the groom must be 21 years at the time of marriage. In the last phase 715 marriages were performed in all the nine Assembly constituencies in the district. He said that the TTD would be supplying thalibottu, mattelu and new clothes besides free food to 60 participating members of each newly-wed couple. The Collector has appointed a special officer and two tehsildars for each Assembly segment to oversee arrangements. Salur MLA P. Rajanna Dora, MLC G. Srinivasulu Naidu, ITDA PO Suvarna Panda Das, DRO Y. Narasimha Rao and others were present.
