Summer cricket camp

VISAKHAPATNAM: Nearly 500 players in the under-12, 14 and 16 age groups besides 15 women cricketers are taking part in the month-long summer cricket camp sponsored by The Hindu and organised by the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association which began at the ACA-VDCA YSR Stadium here on Sunday.

As many as 35 qualified coaches are engaged in training the players at five centres and there would a tournament after the camp and those performing well would be selected for intensive training, former international umpire and VDCA secretary K. Parthasarathy said.

Vice-president P.R. Narayanaswami who chaired the function, asked the children to adopt the copybook style to develop technique and not throw the bat wildly. Vice-presidents SSRK Prasad and DS Varma, former Andhra player M.S. Kumar, Joint secretaries JKM Raju and A.P. Naidu, and Regional General Manager of The Hindu, T.V. Suresh, were present.— Special Correspondent
