IOB and Rising Star clinch titles

Sports Reporter

CHENNAI: Defending champion IOB scripted a convincing 44-20 win over Customs to clinch the Nagan Memorial Cup in the final league match of the British Empire-SRM Rising Star State-level basketball tournament at the Corporation playgrounds (T. Nagar) here on Sunday.

In the women's category, last year's runner-up Rising Star defeated Madras National Basketball Club (MNBC) 62-47 to bag the Amalraj Memorial Cup.

The men's final was a repeat of last year's edition and Customs finished second best yet again. For IOB, skipper S. Aravindh combined well with Vineeth Revi Mathew and in-form hoopster Hareesh Koroth.

In the women's final, Rising Star began well with a nine-point lead in the first quarter.

MNBC came back hard and at the end of the third quarter, it stood at 37 points, three shy of its rival.

Surging ahead

Rising Star, riding on stellar displays from Alagu Tamil Mozhi and Appoorva, took advantage of MNBC's jaded defence and surged ahead to victory in the decisive final quarter.

The winner in the men's section took home Rs. 30,000 while the runner-up was richer by Rs. 20,000. The third best team ended with Rs. 8,000. The first three places in the women's competition won Rs. 15,000, Rs. 10,000, and Rs. 8,000 respectively.

The results:

Men: Final: IOB 44 (Hareesh Koroth 16) bt Customs 20; Third place: ICF 63 (Aswin 14, Thangam 14) bt BSNL 52 (Saravanakumar 16, Arun Chandra Doss 11)

Women: Final: Rising Star 62 (Alagu Tamil Mozhi 17, Appoorva 15) bt MNBC 47 (Sunitha Suren 21); Third place: Slammers 48 (Kiruthika 20) bt Golden Eagle BC 33 (Dhanabakkiyam 11) .
