KASARAGOD: The Punchiri Arts and Sports Club at Muliyar here has been chosen for the Gramasree award for ‘its relentless fight against the prolonged aerial spraying of Endosulfan.' The award, instituted by the Nooranad-based (Alappuzha) Gramasree Environment Conservation Committee, consists of a statute and a citation. The award will be given away at a solidarity meeting of eco activists at Nooranad later this month. Forest Minister Benoy Viswom and Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran are expected to attend. The club came to the forefront of the campaign when its activists tried to stop aerial spraying of the pesticide by Plantation Corporation Kerala Ltd. (PCKL) at the Muthalapara cashew estate in December 1998. The club would move the court against PCKL for carrying out aerial spraying in its cashew estates in 11 districts ‘in flagrant violation of various norms,' a press release issued here on Monday said. At an emergency meeting at Muliyar, the office-bearers of the club sought an interim relief of Rs.10 lakh each to the victims of Endosulfan use. A cell should be set up to take acre of the treatment of victims, the release said. A minimum pension of Rs.5,000, government jobs for dependents, and provision of safe drinking are the other demands. The proposed medical college under the Central University should be set up at Muliyar by acquiring land owned by PCKL.
