HYDERABAD: Mayor B. Kartika Reddy on Monday announced that a month long awareness campaign against the use of plastic will be taken up following which a strict ban on the usage will be taken up from July 1 onwards. At a meeting organised with retailers, hoteliers and other businessmen at the municipal head office, she said the ban will cover manufacture, usage and even storage of plastic bags irrespective of the microns. “I appeal to the citizens and businessmen to start using environment friendly bags like those made of cloth and jute,” she said. Ms. Reddy pointed out that the twin cities is facing a lot of problem with the plastic waste, especially in causing obstructions to smooth flow of drain water and excess rain. It was not only a health hazard but was also causing an enormous burden on the GHMC budget as crores of rupees were being spent each year to clean the storm water drains or nalas. To a suggestion, Ms. Kartika Reddy agreed to see that the municipal corporation would segregate the plastic and non-plastic garbage at the source level itself. GHMC will start an awareness campaign by pasting posters, banners and also use the audio-visual media to home in the message about the plastic ban. Assembled businessmen sought phase wise implementation of the ban for better results. Senior municipal officials participated in the meeting.
