BANGALORE: The World 10K that put Bangalore on the global distance-running map will this year be conducted under a new name — TCS World 10K — and will be flagged off on June 5. The event supported by the State Government and its various agencies is promoted by Procam International. This was announced at the launch conference at the Windsor Manor here last night with its brand ambassador filmstar Ganesh urging the youth of Bangalore to come onto the streets in large numbers. With increased prize money (from US$ 155,000 to US$ 170,000), this year's event is expected to attract a larger field with the Indian Challenge winners in both the men's and women's section standing to pocket a substantial hike. The Corporate Challenge Relay is an added attraction to bring in corporate participation in large numbers. Romania's Beijing Olympics champion Constantina Dita, who won the gold at age 38, is the Event Ambassador and is expected to be an integral part of the event leading to the race day. Praveen Sood, the Traffic Commissioner, however warned the enthusiastic participants: “With Namma Metro work in progress and many of the roads in poor state, it will be a bumpy run.” The race day will see events for: Senior citizens (4 kms), Wheelchair event (4 kms), Open 10K run, Corporate Challenge Relay and the Majja run (5.7 kms) besides the main World 10K run for elite men and women. The four day Health and Style Expo 2011 to be organised and marketed by PDA Events will this time be held at the Koramangala Indoor stadium from June 1 to 4. — Special Correspondent
