Vote for Trinamool will embolden Maoists: Buddhadeb

Maoists trying to extend sphere of influence with Trinamool's aid: Left parties

‘Left Front committed to consolidating successes achieved in agro sector'

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday said that a vote for the Trinamool Congress would embolden the Maoists who had been creating violence and engaging in subversive acts in certain parts of the State.

“A vote for the Trinamool Congress will go in favour of the Maoists,” he told an election rally at Jhargram in Paschim Medinipur — an area that has been affected by Left-Wing Extremism in recent times.

“We will have to remain alert and stop them [the Trinamool] from facilitating the return of the Maoists to areas from where the extremists have been flushed out,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said even as he underlined his government's resolve to restore peace and normality in the Jangal Mahal area, spanning parts of south-west of the State, in which the Maoists have a presence.

The Left parties have been maintaining that the Trinamool had links with the Maoists, who have been trying to extend their sphere of influence with its help. Trinamool leaders had also been holding meetings with those belonging to Maoist-backed outfits such as the Police Santrash Birodhi Janasadharner Committee (PSBJC).

The Trinamool was abetting the Maoists in their targeting of Left party leaders and workers in its endeavour to make inroads and establish a presence in Jangal Mahal — a region considered a stronghold of the Left parties — and the surrounding areas.

Mr. Bhattacharjee had, in his election meetings, cautioned against attempts by the Maoists to extend their activities to other parts of the State with the help of the Trinamool.

The Left Front government was determined to prevent this, he had asserted.

Pointing out that the Maoists had been responsible for incidents of violence in parts of Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bankura districts during the past year, Mr. Bhattacharjee described the PSBJC as an outfit “of killers”.

The Chief Minister underlined the Left Front government's determination to improve the rationing system in the State and to make available rice at Rs.2 per kg to families whose monthly incomes was less than Rs.10,000.

The Left Front was also committed, he pointed out, to consolidating the successes achieved in the agriculture sector by further enhancing productivity, in addition to continuing its drive towards greater industrialisation for the purpose of generating job opportunities to the youth of the State.
